RonKerr | January 1, 2008

High cholesterol is a medical condition that many people find themselves battling today. Many people are plagued by this medical condition but not many understand what exactly cholesterol is and how it works inside the body. Many believe that cholesterol is only affected by what you eat, and while that is partially true there are other factors as well. It is important to know what cholesterol is and how it is working in your body.

Cholesterol is a type of lipid, or fat, and actually plays an important role in the proper function of the body. Cholesterol actually makes up much of the cell membranes and also is important in the livers’ production of acids, which are used in the digestive process. Many hormones are actually produced using cholesterol, including sex hormones. While cholesterol is important to your body having to much cholesterol, especially bad cholesterol, can be quite dangerous.

When there are high levels of bad cholesterol in the body they can actually accumulate in the blood vessels and start causing blockages.  These blockages can then go on to cause serious health problems such as stroke and heart attack. High cholesterol dramatically increases the chance of developing these serious diseases. Bad cholesterol is usually found in people who eat regularly things that are high in fats and cholesterol. Cutting back on these types of food can improve your cholesterol levels and help to lower your health risk.

Many people are fooled into thinking that only diet can contribute to high cholesterol, but that is not true. While diet is a definite cause of high cholesterol there are other factors to consider as well. Some people actually possess a gene that causes them to have high cholesterol. Other present diseases can also cause high levels of cholesterol in the body such as diabetes, thyroid problems, and kidney diseases, and certain medications can be to blame as well.

Knowing how cholesterol works in your body and the factors that can cause high cholesterol is important. Being informed to how your body works and what causes problems can help you in your efforts to control and lower your cholesterol. While there are some causes of high cholesterol that cannot be helped, things like diet can be changed. Realizing that diets high in fat can increase your bad cholesterol level can help you see where to make changes and aid you in making lifestyle changes that can prolong your life.
